Bio
Sagit Shir is a world class musician and educator, who specializes in teaching language through music in early childhood education. Born into a bilingual household to an Australian mother and Israeli father, she spent her childhood traveling with her family between both countries, appreciating the benefits of multilingual and cultural exposure from early on.
Shir’s teaching career began 25 years ago as an early childhood music educator, coinciding with the launch of her professional music career as a touring musician with the highly sought-after IDF entertainment units. In 2003 she attended the renowned Rimon School of Contemporary Music and Jazz, where she earned acclaim for her compositions and arrangements, receiving multiple awards along the way and a scholarship to Berklee College of Music. Choosing an unconventional path, she declined the scholarship to Berklee and instead moved to Havana, Cuba in 2006, where she immersed herself in the world of Cuban music, studying drums & percussion under world-class musicians.
In 2008, Shir co-founded the the indie rock duo Hank & Cupcakes with her lifelong partner, Ariel Scherbacovsky. Together they relocated to New York City, and shorty after signed a publishing and record deal with BMG. Over the next decade, the duo toured extensively across the United States and the world, gaining media attention from press such as Vogue Italy, MTV.com, Rolling Stone Russia, Haaretz newspaper & Timeout New York.
After the birth of her two daughters, Sagit naturally returned her focus to teaching, channeling her extensive musical background and global perspective into early childhood education. Her experiences as a seasoned touring musician, her multicultural upbringing, and her passion for fostering acceptance through music culminated in the founding of Global Kids Music.
“I am passionate about exposing children to new music and languages, creating positive connections to the experience of learning and opening a gate within their malleable minds that leads to curiosity about the world around them"
